Having people in strategic places

“It is not what you know, but who you know” is often said in the business world. I don’t know the origin of this, but it seems as if it now also applies in some churches. (Read on under comments)

  1. Sometimes church numbers drop, and this may cause a crises in a church. Where should a denomination start when a group decides to change the course of that denomination, in order to keep members from leaving? Certainly on their knees, waiting to hear God’s Voice and God’s Will. And only AFTER they are sure that it is God’s will for a change, can they start with the next step. And all the while they should ask if whatever they are planning, is in line with the Word, of the Will of God.

Unfortunately, the “postmodern church” has forgotten how and where to seek answers. The Bible, God’s Word, has become “people’s words about God”. And the truth? Nowhere to be found, surely not in this book, most of which they consider to be mythical....

So they do “the next best thing” : do it like politics or business is done: befriend people in high places or better still, see that you HAVE people in high places. Create a “them” and “us” scenario: “they” being ordinary church members and “we” being the leadership who have all the knowledge and skills. Do this as secretly as possible, let sleeping dogs lie...

And this is where the trouble starts: not all members are fools, and sooner or later, some of them start asking questions....
